In an ideal world, our family & partners would support us, champion us and truly appreciate our creative business efforts, activities and results.

Sadly, for many creatives, this isn’t reality. They’re surrounded by negativity and doubt from those closest to them.

Maybe this is you right now. But it doesn’t have to be….read on 😘

Negativity comes on a spectrum; from all-out destructive criticism and cease and desist demands; from trivialisation and scepticism, to a total lack of interest and ignorance.

And it can be crushing.

I know, because I’ve been there with my parents whose love for me translated into fear and scepticism. Ten years ago, as a grown woman of 38, I became a child again, seeking approval and convincing them to ‘see’ my perspective. When I really should’ve realised their approval & understanding was not a requirement for my success. At the time, it was a stressful and deeply hurtful experience. (they are now fully on-board and terribly proud!*)

Our creativity comes from our souls, from the very essence of who we are and we simply have to express it in our lives and through our businesses. For us, it’s a non-negotiable. But for others, it can seem trivial and frivolous.

And that can really hurt. We question whether we really should give it all up and get a proper job or even leave the relationship entirely.

Have a sensible and blame-free conversation with them. In a neutral setting, to diffuse any charged emotions. Ask them to explain exactly what they think, what they are afraid of, what they disagree with and what they worry will happen. Invite them to share their own hopes, ambitions and life goals with you. Maybe you can find some common ground.Firstly, all this is not your fault. You do not deserve the negativity and your desire to build a creative business is not the core problem here. Please don’t stop following your dreams simply because others cannot see or understand them. Do not give in or give up.

Reasons why others are negative & unsupportive about your creative business:

  • It could be based on their own limiting beliefs, their own fears and expectations, based on their own life experiences and ingrained, inherited philosophies & patterns of behaviour.
  • Love can be expressed as fear, which can turn into negativity and a desire to keep you safe from things they don’t personally understand.
  • They are not on the same journey as you; they’re not immersed in it like you are. They aren’t a creative like you. They don’t run their own business. They haven’t read the books, listened to the podcasts, spoken to the people you have. They simply cannot relate.

Ways you can help the situation:

  • Accept that we’re not all supposed to have exactly the same goals, ambitions and dreams in life. It’s OK. Forgive them for their lack of support or understanding, and keep going. Lead by example. Show them they were wrong about you! *
  • Have a sensible and blame-free conversation with them. In a neutral setting, to diffuse any charged emotions. Maybe you can find some common ground.
  • Bring them into your world by sharing a book that influenced you positively, by showcasing someone else who’s succeeded in your type of business, sharing links to your favourite podcasts or YouTube channels. Let them see your creative process in action. Share testimonials and reviews highlighting how your work has impacted people. By sharing the journey, opening your world to them, they might slowly change their perspective.

If all that fails, please don’t use their lack of support as an excuse to give up. It can be all too easy to fall into victim mode, to keep the peace by sacrificing your own happiness, or to blame your failure-to-thrive on others.
